The background comes first. In this case the background is a sky. The sky I want for this painting will be smooth as silk starting with the thinnest line of lamp black to a mixture of titanium white and cobalt blue where it meets the buildings. The majority of the sky will be cobalt blue but with a whisper of French ultramarine blue and permanent rose to give it a little flavor.
